Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal Cord Injury “SCI” can be caused by direct injury to the spinal cord itself or from damage to the tissue and bones (vertebrae) that surround the spinal cord. This damage can cause temporary or permanent changes in sensation, movement, strength, and body functions below the site of injury.

The extent of disability depends on where along the spinal cord the injury occurs and the severity of the injury. An injury higher on the spinal cord can paralysis most of your body and affect all limbs. A lower injury to the spinal cord may paralysis your legs and lower body.

How Can Neurophysiotherapy Help?

As every spinal cord injury can present differently, we at Kilkeel Physio Clinic prioritise an individualised holistic approach to our assessment where we not only identify sensory and motor deficits but also the individuals remaining functional elements. This is important as we aim to improve impaired structures and optimise intact structures so that a functional gain is more readily achievable. Our treatment programmes are patient centred with the goals of the patient being at the centre of every decision being made about their treatment journey.
