Knee Pain

Knee pain can have many causes including pain causes by sudden injury, overuse injury or underlying conditions such as arthritis.

Sudden injuries can cause meniscal (cartilage) or ligament damage to the knee.

We will ask you a number of questions in relation to the injury and also about the mechanism of injury. You may experinnce a feeling of locking, clicking and giving way. The amount of swelling present after the injury, history of previous knee injuries are other factors that we would need to know.

This will give the physiotherapist an indication of what the cause of your knee pain is. We will then perform a physical assessment, performing a number of clinical tests to aid your treatment.

Overuse injuries can include patellar tendinitis which presents itself as pain at the bottom of the knee cap. This happens when the patellar tendon, which attaches your quadriceps muscles to the shinbone becomes inflamed.
