Vestibular Rehab
Vestibular Rehab
Dizziness and vertigo can be very debilitating. It can cause postural instability, nausea, vomiting, hearing loss, confusion, light / sound sensitivity and reduced quality of life. Unfortunately, medical management alone may not bring lasting improvements to these conditions.
Vestibular rehabilitation for dizziness and vertigo aims to improve the structures within the inner ear that are causing these symptoms. Click the links below to get more information regarding some of the most
common vestibular conditions.
Assessment of the inner ear structures is done initially through an extensive history taking. The patient will also complete specific questionnaires regarding their dizziness to give their physiotherapist a greater understanding of their limitation in life.
The physiotherapist will assess a patient’s posture, muscular strength, ROM of their joints, balance, coordination, and proprioception. Furthermore, the physiotherapist will perform many tests of the
patient’s eyes. These tests aim to identify the presence of irregular eye movements called
nystagmus. These tests will be done using special assessment goggles called Frenzel goggles.
The presence of nystagmus can identify if the issue is within the inner ear or the brain.
The treatment of vestibular conditions aims to reorganise altered information going from the inner ear to the brain so that vertigo symptoms can be improved. Your physiotherapist will implement a personalised rehabilitation programme.
The exercises selected will focus on improving altered eye
movements. Specific head moving manoeuvres such as the Epleys and BBQ roll manoeuvres will be
used where indicated. Furthermore, an individualised balance retraining programme will be conducted. This approach will assist the individual improve their vertigo related symptoms.
