Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune condition that causes demyelination and plaque build ups in the brain and spinal cord, resulting in a wide range of potential symptoms. These symptoms can include but is not limited to weakness, altered sensation, pain, poor vision, decreased coordination & proprioception, poor balance, poor ability to walk and stand up etc.
There are various types of MS ranging from Relapsing Remitting to Primary Progressive subtypes. These subtypes have varying speeds of symptom progression and we have many years’ experience treating patients in the various stages of the disease process.
How Can Neurophysiotherapy Help?
The physiotherapists at Kilkeel Physio Clinic aim is to elongate the remission phase (periods of fewer symptoms) of the disease and shorten the relapse phase (periods where symptoms flare up). We also aims to slow the progression of MS in the more severe forms of the disease. This is achieved through an in depth physiotherapy assessment and subsequent tailored rehabilitation programme to aid motor re-relearning. The rehabilitation programme will consist of hands on physiotherapy to aid postural correction for mobility and transfers while accompanying a personalised home exercise programme to enable the patient to self-manage their symptoms. This programme can contain exercises for strengthening, stretching, improving balance and posture, gait re-education and pain relief.
The physiotherapists at Kilkeel Physio Clinic have great experience in progressing/adapting rehabilitation interventions for their MS patients throughout the course of their condition. This experience was fostered through many years of postgraduate experience with MS patients in the NHS in England while concurrently attending various training courses in Neurological rehabilitation.
